He didn't/couldn't/wasn't able to see/realize/understand the danger/risk/peril he was in. As he reached/got to/climbed up to the top, the branch/limb/twig broke/snapped/fell. Sam plummeted/fell/crashed to the ground with a loud/sharp/painful thud/sound/crash.

A New Friend

Sam was feeling a little sad. He hoped to have a new friend to play with. One day, while he was exploring in the woods, he saw something interesting. It was a little creature with bright fur. Sam carefully went up to the creature and said, "Hello! What's your name?" The creature smiled read more and answered Sam, "You can call me Lily!" And so, Sam made a new friend. They spent the rest of the day playing together.
